Alexis Butaud studied to be a priest in France, but decided that this would not be his vocation. He stowed away on a ship bound to America to escape the priesthood. He arrived in Louisiana in 1827 where he worked on the docks of New Orleans for a year. In 1828 he went to Cote Blanche Bay in St. Mary Parish, LA by sailboat and then traveled inland to the Charenton, St. Mary Parish, LA area. Here he settled. He later owned a farm to the west of Charenton, LA38.

    ____________________

A family legend says that Alexis Butaud was destined to become a priest and, in fact, was ordained and conducted one mass. The priesthood, however, was not his desire and immediately after conducting the mass, he boarded ship for America - landing in Louisiana. This is from an interview in about 1936 with Victorine Butaud (daughter of Alexis Butaud) by Clet Butaud and Phelogan
Butaud (cousin of Clet)79.

    ____________________

There is a family story that Alexis Butaud came from Brest, France where his family had a silk factory. Told to me in 1996 at Abbeville, LA by Beverly Jeanne Butaud Guidry from a 1996 interview with Mildred Butaud Connor.

In the Census of 1860 of St. Mary Parish, LA Alexis Butaud is listed as a 56-year old male farmer with $6,000 in real estate value and $6,000 in person property value and as being from France47.

    ____________________

After arriving in Louisiana from France, Alexis Butaud was naturalized a U. S. citizen in St. Mary Parish, LA on 13 Jul 1838. His Naturalization Record on file in the St. Mary Parish, LA Clerk of Court’s Office states that he came to the United States more than five years before 13 Jul 1838 and that included three years of living in the minority (i.e., before age 18). He has lived in Louisiana more than one year before 13 Jul 183839,41,80.

Alexis Butaud registered a cattle brand in the “Brand Book for Opelousas and Attakapas Disticts, 1739-1888”. It was registered in 1836 on page 197 of the Brand Book37.

    ____________________

In 1836 Alexis Butaud purchased two adjacent pieces of land in St. Mary Parish within the northwest corner of Township14S, Range 8E. His property is bordered on the east by that of Gabiel Fuselier and on the west by that of Hypolite Breau. A small stream ran through the western piece of land that he purchased. His land was part of the original Bodin Plantation. Today the Evangeline Thruway bisects the Alexis Butaud property81.

    ____________________

In the 1860 Census of St. Mary Parish, LA the family of Alexis Butaud contains a girl named Elie who is 12 years old (i.e., born about 1848). She is listed as the same age as the son Alexis Butaud. It is uncertain if this Elie is a child of Alexis Butaud or simply a young girl living with the family47.

    ____________________

In the 1860 Census of Louisiana Alexis Butaud is listed as the head of a household in St. Mary Parish, LA in the Berwick City district. He is listed on page 139 of the census43.

    ____________________

Alexis Butaud is listed on the 1850 Federal Census on page 222 as living in St. Mary Parish, LA82. He is also listed on the 1850 Slave Schedule on page 253 as living in St. Mary Parish, LA. This would indicate that he owned one or more slaves in 185083.

    ____________________

One family tradition is that Alexis Butaud came from either Paris, France or the Alsace-Lorraine area of France - both stories have been related by Eugene Theriot Butaud to his two daughters84.
Questions/Errors notes for Alexis (Spouse 1)
In HEB-001 the wife of Alexis Butaud is called Marie E. LaCaze (LaCase)85 rather than Marie E. Lange.

In HEB-001 there is an Adele Bertrand, daughter of Alexis and Irma Lange. Although it is enticing to think of this young girl as the daughter of Alexis Butaud and Marie Irma Lange, she is actually the daughter of Alexis Bertrand, fils and Marie Carmelite Trahan. Adele Bertrand was born on 25 Aug 1832 in St. Martin Parish, LA while Adele Butaud was born 6 Jul 1837 in Iberia Parish, LA. The mother above is incorrectly given as Irma Lange rather than Marie Carmelite Trahan. The first four children of Alexis Bertrand, fils and Marie Carmelite Trahan were: Melaide Bertrand (b. 7 May 1833), Divine Bertrand (bapt. 10 Oct 1834 at age 4 weeks), Adele Bertrand (b. 25 Aug 1835) and Marie Uranie Bertrand (b. 27 Sep 1836)86.

In PER-001 Alexis Butaud is referred to as Alexander Butand87,88.

In the Census of 1850 of St. Mary Parish, LA Alexis Butaud is listed as a white male 38 years of age (i.e., born in 1812). In this Census he is listed as being born in France and currently having no occupation59. The 1812 year of birth conflicts with other documents giving his year of birth as 180344,89; however, it would agree with his Naturalization Record which states that he was about fifteen when he arrived in the United States39. The 1860 St. Mary Parish Census gives his age as 56 (i.e., year of birth of 1804), his birthplace as France, his occupation as farmer and his ownings in real estate and personal property as $6000 each90.
