Questions/Errors notes for (Unknown) GUÉDRY

In the 1825 Succession of Pierre Guédry (Succession #543 in St. Martin Parish, LA Courthouse) Pierre Guédry states that his first wife and their two infants died shortly after arriving in Louisiana. Pierre Guédry and Marguerite Dupuis arrived in Louisiana about 11 February 1768 and they had one daughter Marie, age 3 (born about 1765) - indicating that they married about 1764, probably at Port Tobacco, MD since Marguerite Dupuis was living there at the time.

Marguerite Dupuis died at San Luis de Natchez about July 1768. Thus the second child of Pierre Guédry and Marguerite Dupuis would have been born between February 1768 and July 1768. It is likely that both children died in 1768 or 1769 as Pierre Guédry married Claire Babin on 22 January 1769. This family moved to Ascension Parish in December 1769 or early 1770. A Census taken 1 August 1770 in Ascension Parish shows Pierre Guédry and Claire Babin with their son Pierre [sic, should be Louis David], age 5 months. There is no mention of either child of Pierre Guédry and Marguerite Dupuis - indicating both had died prior to August 1770.

The name and sex of the second child has not been discovered in any extant document to date. In “Quest for a Promised Land - Official Correspondence Relating to the First Acadian Migration to Louisiana, 1764-1769”, the authors suggest that the name of this child was Pierre Guédry fils4170; however, they do not cite a source for this name. I have never located a source which names the second child of Pierre Guédry and Marguerite Dupuis. Perhaps, the authors noticed the 1770 Census of Ascension Parish4244,4245 in which Pierre Guédry and Marguerite Dupuis had a son Pierre who was five months old (born about March 1770). The name of this child in later records is Louis David Guédry and it appears the census taker recorded it incorrectly. Regardless, this child was the son of Pierre Guédry and Claire Babin - not Pierre Guédry and Marguerite Dupuis, who had died before 1770.
