During his early life Philogene Butaud farmed land near Charenton, LA where he married Laure Therese Bonin and had ten children. Philogene Butaud served the Confederacy in the Civil War and was taken prisoner during the war. He remained in prison in New Iberia, LA for 18 months. He was released from prison on 30 October 1863. After 1878 Philogene moved his family from the Charenton area to Vermilion Parish, LA where he purchased land from Martin Bagley - later known as the Burt Place - in Prairie Gregg

During the Civil War Philogene Butaud served as a private in Co. I, 3rd Louisiana Cavalry (Harrison). He was listed on the Rolls of Prisoners of War that were paroled at New Iberia, LA on June 13, 1865. His residence was listed as St. Mary Parish, LA. In the military records he is referred to as P. Butand. He served in the same company as his younger brother Alexis Butaud.

Eugene Theriot Butaud inherited two photographs from his father Clerville Louis Butaud, who had inherited them from his father Philogene Butaud. One of the photographs was of General Robert E. Lee and the other was of General Ulysses S. Grant. The story told by the family is that after the Civil War General Robert E. Lee gave these photographs to Philogene Butaud. Eugene Theriot Butaud greatly treasured these photographs. Family tradition was that the photographs were to be passed down to a male family member. When Eugene Theriot Butaud died, Sylvia Jean Butaud Pattison gave the photographs to her son Brett Patrick Pattison
